Whitney Houston organized two concerts at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., the second of which aired live on HBO. Whitney dedicated the concerts to opera singer Marian Anderson — in the 100th anniversary year of her birth — who had been banned from performing at the Hall in 1939 by the Daughters of the American Revolution. DAR reversed their decision in later years. During the concert, Whitney performed tributes to selected musicians and songwriters, and some of her own classic songs. All of Whitney’s proceeds from the concerts, totaling more than a quarter of a million dollars, were donated to the Children’s Defense Fund.
