Whitney Houston became the first major musician to visit and perform in South Africa following the election of Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa in 1994. To celebrate the newly unified South Africa and to honor Mandela, Whitney organized three concerts, one of which — Whitney: The Concert For A New South Africa — was broadcast live from Johannesburg on HBO. Whitney donated proceeds from the concerts to numerous children’s charities including two children’s museums, the President’s Trust Fund, the Kagiso Trust, and several orphanages.
